Harmony Road Music Courses

Music for the Very Young

16 months to 6 years

These outstanding courses are taught by certified instructors, Cathy Hawthorne & Stacy Golden, exclusively at the New Mexico School of Music.

Toddler Tunes   (ages 16 months – 3 years)

A joyful music experience! Tots and parents share in a music-making program of rhythms, finger plays, keyboard exploration, active movement games, singing and activities with toys such as hoops, balls and scarves. Parents share in class time.

Hello Music   (Ages 3 – 4 years)

Hello Music offers an introduction to solfege singing, movement, rhythm, keyboard playing, and creative activities. This program gives the child a strong readiness for continued musical involvement. Parents share in class time.

Musictime   (Ages 4 – 6 years)

Musictime offers an introduction to solfege singing, movement, rhythm, keyboard playing, and creative activities. This program gives the child a strong readiness for continued musical involvement. Parents share in class time.

Junior Music Camp

(Ages 4 – 6 years)


The Junior Music Camp provides an activity oriented musical experience for four to six year olds. Camps meet two hours daily for one week. Each day a different theme is explored through music and craft activities. Focus themes include Teddy Bears, Dinosaurs, Carnival of the Animals, Peter and the Wolf, and The Nutcracker.

This course is designed for students of all ages who have at least one year of experience playing piano and/or taking private lessons. Students will explore piano repertoire, the history of keyboard instruments, various composers, ensemble playing, improvisation and jazz piano.

Music Day Camp

No experience necessary!

Ages 7 - 13

Students ages 7 – 13 will be divided into different groups according to age and musical interests. Each day will combine group and individual instruction on a variety of instruments and voice, as well as classes that present elements of music theory, history and art in a fun and exciting way! All camp students will participate in a performance for family and friends at the end of the week!

Music Day Camp Activities will be selected from the following:

  • Keyboard Symphony — Children will explore the sounds of virtually all instruments of a symphony orchestra, from a mysterious marimba to a magical flute! They will learn the basics of keyboard playing and how to play some familiar and favorite songs. Students will also learn to develop their listening skills as they play with a rhythm machine and together as an ensemble.
  • Guitar Ensemble (Beginning) — This group will cover guitar basics, including proper body and hand placement. Students will a learn single-string picking technique starting with melodies on one string and then 2, etc. Music notation, tab, simple chords, and beginning songs will be introduced. The guitar ensembles may include groups of acoustic, electric or both!
  • Introduction to Musical Theater — Students will learn the basics of singing through songs from popular musicals. Students will be introduced to proper breathing, posture, vocal projection and character study. Introduction to Musical Theater allows students to explore their singing voice in a group setting, with familiar tunes. Also incorporating drama and movement, this class exposes students to the basics of a Musical Theater production.
  • Music and Art — The history of art, music and stylistic relationships between the two will be explored while we create our own artistic masterpieces!

Enrollment for Rock & Roll Camp is based on an audition, scheduled individually at the school. The camp will include individual instrumental / include individual instrumental instruction, history of rock music, rehearsal techniques, music composition, and will culminate in a performance at the end of the week. The camp is open to students of all levels who wish to play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocalists.

Flute players of all ages and levels are invited to join a flute choir! We will offer two ensembles: one for beginning (at least 1 year of experience) to intermediate players, and one for advanced players. Flutists will experience the unique sound of a flute choir as they work together on a variety of music. Students will have the opportunity to play melody as well as accompaniment lines, and emphasis will be placed on listening to each other, pitch awareness and blending of sound. The week will culminate in a concert for family and friends!

Private Music Lessons

Year-Round Enrollment

The New Mexico School of Music offers private lessons throughout the year on virtually all instruments and voice for students of all ages and levels. To make the best progress, students should enroll for at least for 4 consecutive lessons, one or two per week.
